IDM-Africa Fellowship Programme 2027 for Infectious-Disease Modellers in Sub-Saharan Africa
Brief Description
Applications are open for the IDM-Africa Fellowship Programme 2027, an initiative tailored for early- and mid-career scientists across sub-Saharan Africa. The 12-month program targets researchers who possess foundational training and practical expertise in infectious-disease modelling, offering them the resources to design applied, policy-relevant research using their own data. Selected fellows access structured mentorship from leading modellers and disease experts to translate mathematical models into tangible public health policy tools. If you are seeking an infectious-disease modelling fellowship or a sub-Saharan Africa scientists fellowship 2027, this structured track provides both technical validation and regional policy engagement.
Name of Host Institution
The program is coordinated by The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in partnership with the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB) and Amsterdam University Medical Center (UMC). In-person placements take place at host training sites including ACE-Uganda (Kampala) and ACE-B (Bamako-Mali), with additional mentorship supported by the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD).

- Demonstrate practical experience in infectious-disease modelling, including having led the mathematical component of a project.
- Possess proficiency in at least one relevant programming language or platform, such as R, Python, or MATLAB, with proven ability to formulate models and manage datasets.
- Show a dedicated career commitment to public health application and disease modelling in Africa.
Fellowship Structure
The fellowship spans 12 months, beginning with a one-month in-person placement at either ACE-Uganda or ACE-B for intensive project creation alongside assigned mentors. The remaining 11 months consist of remote mentorship, featuring bi-weekly mentor sessions, peer-learning groups, monthly updates, and formal quarterly review meetings.
Key Deliverables
- A fully validated infectious-disease model with reproducible code in R, Python, or equivalent software.
- A completed project report submitted directly to the IDM-Africa coordinating centre at IDI.
- A peer-reviewed manuscript submitted to an open-access journal as lead author.
- A lead-author policy brief detailing public health recommendations for regional decision-makers.
