IRCC Processing Times Drop for Extensions and Visitor Records

Shorter Wait Times Hit IRCC Extension and Visitor Records

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) cut wait times across several key temporary residence categories in its October 29 update, offering some relief to applicants managing pending files.

What Changed for Extensions and Visitor Records

Visitor records saw the sharpest drop in the latest departmental update, falling by 20 days to land at 321 days down from 341 days. Study permit extensions dropped to six weeks, while work permit extensions eased to 11 weeks.

The timeline for work permit extensions covers post-graduation work permits, bridging open work permits, and adjustments to work permit conditions. Despite the improvements, processing backlogs remain substantial. IRCC’s processing inventory as of October 29 included 195,900 work permit extension applications, marking a decrease of 4,200, alongside 25,900 study permit extension applications, which dropped by 1,900.

Study Permit and Visa Adjustments

Study permit processing times ticked down by one week for applications submitted from within Canada, Pakistan, and the United States. Applicants filing from within Canada and Pakistan now face a six-week wait, down from seven weeks, while U.S. applicants dropped to four weeks from five weeks.

At the same time, the department logged a few minor increases. Visitor visa wait times for applicants from India rose slightly to 31 days from 29 days. Super visa applications from the Philippines stretched to 106 days, up from 103 days, making the Philippines the only tracked country to see super visa wait times increase in this update.

Understanding the Numbers

Applicants should remember that these published figures are estimates based on recent processing inventory rather than firm guarantees or hard deadlines. IRCC maintains distinct service standards separate from these historical processing timelines, holding a service standard of 120 days for in-Canada submissions and 60 days for submissions originating outside Canada.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is scheduled to publish its next weekly update on or around November 4.
