Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600): Requirements, Fees and Steps (2026)

Updated on

Most visitors to Australia who need a visa use the Visitor visa (subclass 600). It covers tourism, visiting family and short business visits. This guide covers which visa fits your passport, what to submit, the fee, and how to apply online. Holders of some passports, such as the UK and US, can use a free or low-cost electronic option instead of the subclass 600, while others, including Nigerian passport holders, must use the subclass 600.

What the department looks for

  • Genuine temporary stay: you intend to visit, not live or work in Australia.
  • Enough money: funds for the trip, shown through your own statements or a sponsor.
  • Good character: police certificates may be requested.
  • Health: a medical examination is requested in some cases, depending on your plans and how long you stay.

Documents

  • Valid passport, with a scan of the photo page.
  • A recent passport-style photo.
  • Bank statements and proof of income.
  • Employer letter with approved leave, business registration, or school letter.
  • Travel plan with dates and accommodation, or an invitation from a host in Australia.
  • Family documents showing ties to your home country, such as marriage and birth certificates.

Upload clear scans. Documents that are not in English need certified translations.

Steps

  1. Create an ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website.
  2. Choose the Visitor visa (subclass 600) and fill in the form.
  3. Upload your documents.
  4. Pay the fee online.
  5. If asked, attend a health check or biometrics appointment. The request letter names the place.
  6. Wait for the decision in your ImmiAccount. The visa is linked electronically to your passport.

Why applications fail

  • Not enough proof of funds for the length of stay.
  • Weak ties to your home country, so the officer doubts that you will leave.
  • Missing or inconsistent documents.
  • Health or character concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the eVisitor visa or an ETA instead?

Only if your passport is on the eligibility list for that option. Check the department’s list. Holders of passports that are not on it, such as Nigeria and India, apply for the subclass 600 visa.

Can I study or work on a visitor visa?

You may do short courses of limited length, but you may not work. Longer study needs a student visa.

How much money should I show?

There is no fixed figure. Show enough to cover your flights, accommodation and daily costs for the time you plan to stay, and explain who is paying.
