Finland Visa Guide: Fees, Documents and How to Apply (2026)

Finland Visa Process

Updated on

Whether you need a visa for Finland depends on your passport. Citizens of the UK, US, Canada and Australia can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without one, while Indian and Nigerian citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa. Anyone who wants to study, work or live in Finland for longer needs a residence permit instead. This guide covers the visit visa and how the permit route differs.

The rest of this guide applies to anyone who needs the visa. The embassy and visa centre details below are for applicants in Nigeria; if you apply from another country, use the Finnish mission that covers where you live.

Applications in Nigeria have gone through the VFS Global centre in Abuja since 2019, while the Embassy of Finland still makes the decision. Arrangements can change, so confirm the current process on the Finnish embassy page at finlandabroad.fi and on the VFS Global Nigeria site before you book.

How to apply for a Finland visa

  1. Confirm Finland is your main destination. You apply to Finland if you spend the most days there, or enter there first when the stays are equal.
  2. Complete the application form using the links on the embassy site.
  3. Book a VFS Global appointment in Abuja and bring originals and copies.
  4. Give your biometrics: fingerprints and photo.
  5. Pay the fee and the service charge.
  6. Track the application and collect your passport. Check the visa dates and number of entries.

Documents for a short-stay visa

  • Passport valid at least 3 months after your planned departure, with two blank pages.
  • Two recent photos that meet the Schengen standard.
  • A cover letter that explains your purpose and your plan.
  • A flight reservation and accommodation or an invitation letter.
  • Medical insurance of at least €30,000.
  • Bank statements for the last 6 months and proof of work or business.
  • An employer leave letter or business registration to show you will return.

Residence permits

Permit applications are submitted to the Finnish Immigration Service. You will usually need an admission letter for study, a job offer for work, or a family tie for reunification, with proof of funds. Fees and processing times vary by permit type, so check the Finnish Immigration Service before you apply. Do not travel to Finland until the permit decision is made.

A worked example: choosing the right route

This is an illustration, not a real case. Two friends plan a two-week trip to Helsinki and Lapland in winter. One holds a UK passport and books flights and a hotel with no visa. The other holds a Nigerian passport and first checks the purpose of stay, then books a VFS appointment, gathers six months of bank statements, insurance of at least €30,000, a hotel booking and a leave letter, and applies about two months before travel. Both stay well inside the 90-day limit. Neither may work during the trip, and if either later wants a job in Finland, they would need to apply for a residence permit from outside Finland first.

Why visa applications are refused

  • Bank statements with sudden deposits and no explanation.
  • A purpose of stay that is unclear or does not match the documents.
  • Missing or unverifiable documents.
  • Doubts that you will leave before the visa expires.

The 11 official grounds are explained in our refusal reasons guide, and the application checklist shows how to prepare a stronger file. The Schengen visa guide covers the basics.
