Losing a passport or visa documents is stressful, especially before a trip. The order in which you act matters: report the loss first, replace your passport second and deal with the visa third. This guide gives the steps, explains how different kinds of visa are affected, and shows what to do if you are abroad when it happens.
First, Identify What You Lost
| What is missing | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Passport that holds a visa sticker or foil | The visa is attached to the passport, so you lose both | Report the loss, replace the passport, then ask the visa-issuing office what is possible |
| Passport only, with a digital visa | A UK eVisa is a digital record you access through your UKVI account, not a sticker | Replace the passport, then follow UKVI instructions on updating your details |
| Printed confirmation, appointment letter or bank documents | These are copies of information, not the visa itself | Reprint from your online account, or request fresh copies from the bank or employer |
| Everything, including phone | You cannot sign in to accounts | Use account recovery first. Then follow the steps below |
Who replaces the passport?
| Your passport | Who issues the replacement or emergency document |
|---|---|
| UK | His Majesty’s Passport Office, or the nearest British embassy or consulate if you are abroad |
| US | The US Department of State, or the nearest US embassy or consulate if you are abroad |
| India | The Passport Seva system, or the nearest Indian mission if you are abroad |
| Nigeria | The Nigeria Immigration Service, or the nearest Nigerian mission if you are abroad |
The steps below are the same for every passport: report, replace, then deal with the visa. The Nigerian examples show how one country handles it, so check your own government’s website for its process, fees and timings.

Step by Step
- Search properly for one day. Check bags, vehicles, hotels, taxis and any place you stopped. Ask each of them to check lost property.
- Report to the police. Ask for a written report that states the passport number if you know it. Most embassies and passport offices ask for it.
- Tell the visa-issuing office. Contact the embassy, consulate or visa application centre that handled your visa, with your application number and the police report.
- Replace your passport. Use your own country’s process. For Nigerian citizens, that is the Nigeria Immigration Service passport process. Our guide to the Nigerian passport process covers the portal and appointment steps.
- Ask about the visa. A visa sticker in a lost passport usually cannot be moved to a new one. In most systems, you apply again, and the office will tell you which fees and documents apply.
- Rearrange travel. Check whether your airline and hotel will change your booking, and whether your travel insurance covers lost documents.
A Hypothetical Example
This is an illustration, not a real case. A traveller loses her passport, which holds a Schengen visa, three weeks before her flight. She files a police report the same day, applies for a new passport through the Nigeria Immigration Service, and tells the embassy which issued the visa. Because the old visa was in the lost passport, she has to submit a new Schengen application once the new passport is ready. She keeps her flight booking refundable, so moving the date costs her little. Had she kept a scan of her old visa page, she could have attached it to show her earlier approval.
If You Lose Your Passport Abroad
Contact your country’s nearest embassy or consulate and the local police. As an example of what is asked of Nigerian citizens, the Nigerian Embassy in Germany lists these requirements:
- Emergency Travel Certificate: proof of Nigerian citizenship, a flight ticket or reservation, two passport photographs, payment of the fee (listed there as €50) and an interview at the embassy. It is usually issued the same day and allows travel to Nigeria only, not to Germany or other countries.
- Reissue of a lost passport: an original police report stating the passport number, a copy of the old data page, a signed letter to the Comptroller General of Immigration, and proof of residence. Approval is given only by the Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja.
Requirements and fees vary by mission, so check the website of the embassy that serves you. Our guide to embassy and consulate services explains how offices differ.
Protect Yourself From Misuse
- Report the loss in writing so there is a record that the document was no longer in your control.
- Change passwords for any visa or travel accounts that used the document details.
- Watch for messages offering to “recover” your documents for a fee. These are common scams.
How to Prevent It
- Keep a scan of your passport photo page, visa page and entry stamps in a secure cloud folder and send one copy to a trusted person.
- Carry the original in one zipped bag and keep a printed copy in a different bag.
- Record your passport number, the issue date and the visa number in your phone.
- Buy travel insurance that covers lost documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a police report instead of my passport to fly?
No. A police report is evidence of loss, not a travel document.
Will I lose the visa fee I already paid?
Often yes. Ask the issuing office whether any credit is possible, but do not expect one.

Will a lost passport count against me in future?
A reported loss is not a mark against you. Be open about it if a form asks, and bring the police report. Keep your old trips documented using the advice in our guide on travel history.
How long does a replacement passport take?
It varies. Check the processing information on the Nigeria Immigration Service portal when you apply, and plan your trip around the later date.
