A multiple-entry visa lets you enter a country more than once during its validity without applying again each time. For Nigerians who travel often for business, family or study, it saves fees and time. But not every country issues one by default, and some have recently changed their rules. This guide covers the main destinations, with the current position on each.
Multiple Entry Versus Single Entry
- Single entry: valid for one trip. Once you leave, the visa is used up, even if its dates have not ended.
- Multiple entry: valid for repeated trips until it expires.
- Validity is not stay length. A visa valid for five years does not let you stay for five years. Each visit has its own limit, such as 90 days or six months.

United Kingdom
A standard visitor visa normally covers up to 6 months. For people who need to visit regularly, the UK offers a long-term visitor visa in 2-, 5- and 10-year versions. Each visit is still capped at 6 months, and there is no limit on the number of entries during validity. You cannot use it to live in the UK through back-to-back visits.

To qualify for a long-term visa you generally need to show that you are at least 18, have a genuine reason to visit regularly, can pay for your trips without working, and have a clean immigration record. A history of previous UK visits that you completed on time strengthens the application. Check the fee and the current guidance on gov.uk before you apply.
Schengen Area
The Schengen Area covers many European countries under one short-stay visa. You may stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, counted across all member states together. A multiple-entry Schengen visa is not a first-time right. It follows the cascade rules:
| Step | Visa granted | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1-year multiple entry | You obtained and lawfully used three Schengen visas in the previous 2 years |
| 2 | 2-year multiple entry | You lawfully used a previous 1-year multiple-entry visa in the previous 2 years |
| 3 | 5-year multiple entry | You lawfully used a previous 2-year multiple-entry visa in the previous 3 years |
“Lawfully used” means you followed the 90/180 rule, left on time, used the visa only for its stated purpose and had no overstays or violations. The cascade is not automatic. The consulate still checks funds, purpose and your intention to return. A visa can never run beyond your passport’s expiry, and your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure with at least two blank pages.
Canada
Canadian visitor visas are usually issued as multiple-entry visas, valid for up to 10 years or until one month before your passport expires, whichever comes first. That does not give you the right to stay for that long. The border officer decides how long you may remain on each visit, often up to six months. Applicants from Nigeria are normally asked for proof of funds, ties to Nigeria and a clear reason for travel.
United States
This is the biggest change for Nigerian travellers. On 8 July 2025, the US Embassy in Abuja announced that most non-official nonimmigrant visas for Nigerian citizens would be single entry and valid for three months. It linked the change to the State Department’s reciprocity review and said the entry number and validity can be reviewed at any time. Visas issued before 8 July 2025 remain valid on their original terms.

Before this change, US visas for Nigerians were commonly issued for several years. That is no longer the case for new applications. Check the US Embassy in Abuja website for the current rule before you pay a fee.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE resumed visas for Nigerians after a long pause, with conditions announced in July 2025. Under those conditions, transit visas are not processed for Nigerian nationals. Tourists aged 18 to 45 travelling alone were reported to be ineligible, while applicants aged 45 or over had to show six months of Nigerian bank statements with a month-end balance of at least US$10,000 or the naira equivalent. The published rules did not say how multiple entry works, so read the validity and entry details printed on any visa you receive. Conditions change, so confirm on the UAE’s official visa pages.
How to Strengthen a Multiple-Entry Request
- Show a real reason to return to the same country repeatedly: a business partner, a relative, a study link or ongoing contracts.
- Attach evidence that matches the request, such as invitation letters, past trip stamps and bank statements covering several months.
- Build a record of trips completed on time. This is the single most useful factor for a longer visa.
- Apply only through the official embassy, consulate or authorised visa centre.
- Keep your passport valid. A long visa cannot outlast it.
Worked Example: Building Toward a Longer Schengen Visa
Hypothetical example: a Nigerian trader travels to Europe for trade fairs.
| Year | Visa | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Short-stay visa for one fair | Completed on time; no overstay |
| 1 to 2 | Two more short-stay visas | Each used lawfully |
| 3 | 1-year multiple entry | Granted after three lawful visas within 2 years, if the consulate is satisfied on funds and purpose |
| 4 to 5 | 2-year multiple entry | Possible if the 1-year visa was lawfully used |
The five-year step would need lawful use of the 2-year visa. Progress depends on every trip being clean, and one overstay can reset the path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask for a multiple-entry visa on my first application?
You can ask, but the decision is the officer’s. For the UK long-term visa you must show a genuine need for regular visits, and for Schengen the cascade usually requires earlier lawful use.
Does a 10-year visa mean I can stay 10 years?
No. Each visit has its own limit, such as 6 months in the UK or 90 days in Schengen.
Is my old US visa still valid?
A US visa issued before 8 July 2025 keeps its original validity and number of entries, unless it expires or is cancelled.
What if my passport expires before the visa does?
Schengen visas end at your passport’s expiry date. For others, carry both passports, or ask the issuing office about transferring the visa.
Is a travel agent necessary?
No. You can apply directly through official channels. An adviser can help organise documents, but only the issuing authority decides.
