A passport’s power is measured by how many destinations its holder can enter without arranging a visa in advance. The Henley Passport Index is the best-known ranking: it counts places you can visit visa-free, with visa on arrival, or with an electronic travel authorisation. This guide lists the ten strongest African passports in the 2026 index, shows where Nigeria stands, and explains what the numbers mean in practice.
How the Ranking Works
- The index scores each passport by the number of destinations reachable without a visa obtained before travel.
- Countries with the same score share a rank, so several nations can tie.
- The list is updated several times a year, and positions move when other countries gain or lose agreements, even if your own score stays the same.
- Visa on arrival and eTA count as access, but you still need to meet entry conditions at the border.

What Sets the Leaders Apart
Seychelles and Mauritius
The two island nations are well ahead of the rest of the continent, with scores above 145. Both have broad visa-free access to the Schengen Area and many Asian and Pacific destinations, built through years of agreements with Europe and the Commonwealth. The gap between them and the next African passport, South Africa, is about 45 destinations.
South Africa
South Africa is the strongest passport among the continent’s large economies, with around 100 destinations. Its holders enjoy easy access across southern and eastern Africa and to many countries in Latin America, Asia and Europe’s non-Schengen states, though the United States and the UK require visas.
Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Eswatini
These Southern African passports benefit from the region’s regional agreements and ties to South Africa. Botswana leads the group with about 81 destinations. Lesotho and Eswatini each lost a destination in a recent update, which cost them places even though their scores barely changed.
Morocco, Malawi and Kenya
These three are tightly bunched at 69 to 71 destinations, so small changes by neighbouring countries can swap their order from one update to the next. Kenya’s score is helped by its own open-entry policy for fellow Africans and by agreements with Asian and Caribbean states.

Where Nigeria Stands
Before the numbers, it helps to know the four kinds of entry the index counts, because each one asks something different of you.
| Type of access | What you do | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Visa-free | Arrive with your passport and travel documents | A fixed number of days; officers may ask for a return ticket and funds |
| Visa on arrival | Apply and pay at the border | Fee, queue time, and some airlines check before boarding |
| eTA or e-visa | Apply online before you fly | Use the official portal only; carry the approval |
| Embassy visa | Apply in advance with documents and an appointment | Not counted in the index; processing time and refusal risk apply |
Hypothetical example: a Nigerian consultant plans a 12-day trip taking in Accra, Nairobi and Kigali. Ghana is covered by ECOWAS free movement, Kenya no longer needs an eTA for Nigerians for stays up to 60 days, and the third stop should be checked on Rwanda’s official immigration site. The trip needs one confirmed check and no embassy visit, which is exactly the kind of route a passport score does not show but a visa-rule check does.
| Edition | Nigeria’s world position | Visa-free destinations |
|---|---|---|
| January 2024 | 95th | 45 |
| January 2026 | 89th (up from 103rd a year earlier) | 44 |
| July 2026 | 90th of 199, tied | 44 |
The score has barely changed. Nigeria’s position improved because other passports lost ground, and it slipped by one place in July 2026 because others gained. In practice the Nigerian passport gives easy entry across West Africa under the ECOWAS free-movement arrangement, visa-free or eTA-free entry to a limited number of other African states such as Kenya for up to 60 days, and visa-on-arrival access in a few more. For most of Europe, North America and Asia, a visa is still arranged before departure.
Passport Rank Versus Real-World Travel
- A high score does not cover every place you want to go. South Africans, for example, still need a visa for the UK and the United States.
- A low score does not block travel. A multiple-entry visa to the UK, Schengen Area or Canada can matter more to a frequent traveller than a few extra visa-free destinations.
- Visa-free is not the same as no checks. Border officers can still ask for a return ticket, proof of funds and accommodation.
- Entry rules change without much notice, so confirm the current rule on the destination’s official immigration site before you book.
How to Get the Most From Any Passport
- Check the passport’s validity. Many countries want at least six months remaining, and Schengen states want three months beyond your departure date.
- Look up your destination on its official government site, not just on a ranking list.
- Apply for eTAs and e-visas through the official portal only.
- Keep printed copies of your booking, accommodation and funds.
- Build a good travel record. A clean history of trips completed on time helps with future visa applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the strongest passport in Africa?
Seychelles, with about 154 visa-free destinations in the 2026 index, followed by Mauritius at about 147.
Why do the numbers differ between websites?
The index is refreshed several times a year, and each edition counts the agreements in force at that time. Websites often quote different editions.
Where does the Nigerian passport rank?
90th in the July 2026 update, with access to 44 destinations.
Does a higher rank make a visa easier?
No. Rank only counts visa-free access. A visa decision depends on your own documents, funds, travel history and ties to your home country.
Can I buy a stronger passport?
Some countries sell citizenship, but programmes change quickly, are costly and are often reviewed or restricted by other governments, which can affect the visa-free access of the passport you buy. Get independent legal advice before considering one.
