UK Scraps 6-Year Cap on T2 Minister of Religion Visas

📣 ARTICLE HEADLINE

Foreign Ministers of Religion on the T2 visa route are no longer subject to a six-year stay limit in the United Kingdom, following immigration rule updates implemented by the UK Home Office on October 29, 2026.

The revised rules, published in Statement of Changes HC 584 on September 3, 2026, apply to all applications for entry clearance or permission to stay submitted on or after October 29, 2026. Under the new framework, sponsored religious leaders can also qualify to apply for indefinite leave to remain, commonly known as settlement, after completing five years on the route.

Previously, a hard six-year ceiling capped how long a Minister of Religion could remain in the country. The Home Office has scrapped that limit entirely. Initial permission continues to be granted for up to three years at a time, and applicants no longer face a cooling-off period between visa applications.

Coverage and Qualifying Roles

The T2 Minister of Religion category targets individuals holding key leadership positions within faith-based organizations. Eligible roles include priests, imams, rabbis, missionaries, and members of religious orders whose duties centre on leading worship, preaching, conducting marriages and funerals, delivering religious instruction, and providing pastoral care.

Applicants must meet an English language requirement to qualify. Visa holders may bring partners and dependent children to the UK, provided those family members meet the specific requirements of their visa categories. Most individuals already in the UK under a different immigration status are permitted to switch directly to the T2 Minister of Religion route.

These changes do not apply to the separate Religious Worker route. That temporary category remains capped at a maximum stay of 24 months, with no option to transition into permanent settlement.

Financial Undertakings for Sponsoring Organizations

The updated Home Office guidance adds a direct financial responsibility for faith organizations sponsoring workers.

Where a Minister of Religion or Religious Worker is not entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their role, the sponsoring organization must confirm in writing that it will maintain and accommodate the worker and their dependants for the entire duration of their permission to stay. Only institutions holding an A-rated sponsor licence are permitted to provide this formal undertaking.
