UK Permanent Residency Standard Wait Time Doubles to 10 Years Under New Rules
The UK government announced its new Earned Settlement policy on November 2, 2026, doubling the standard qualifying wait time for Indefinite Leave to Remain from five years to 10 years.
How the Policy Reconstructs Settlement Timelines
The extended 10-year requirement affects temporary visa holders, international graduates, and foreign workers currently building towards permanent residency, as well as individuals planning to move to Britain. Under the rules, eligibility hinges on economic contribution and compliance rather than time spent in the country alone.

People who already hold Indefinite Leave to Remain will not lose their status, and existing temporary visas will not be automatically cancelled. However, because applications are evaluated under the rules in force at the time of submission, migrants currently living in the UK without permanent status face the longer timeline unless they qualify for accelerated tracks.
Time spent studying on a Student visa or working on a Graduate visa will no longer count toward the 10-year settlement threshold. Furthermore, effective January 1, 2027, the UK government will cut the standard Graduate visa duration from two years to 18 months, though doctoral graduates retain their three-year grant.
Qualifying Tracks and Compliance Penalties
The policy creates specific fast-track tiers for high earners and essential public service staff, while imposing severe administrative delays on anyone who violates immigration conditions.
