Once you know which visa route fits you, the next step is the job search. Employers in Canada read resumes differently, want proof that your credentials match local standards, and often hire through contacts. This guide covers those steps, with a sample resume layout and a simple search plan. For the visa routes themselves, see our guide to Canada visa pathways for Nigerians.
Build a Canadian-style resume
- Keep it to one or two pages.
- Do not include a photo, date of birth, marital status or religion.
- List results, not just duties. Say what you improved or delivered, with numbers if you can.
- Adjust it for each job using the words in the advert.
- Keep your LinkedIn profile consistent with your resume.
A simple resume layout
| Section | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Header | Name, city, phone, professional email, LinkedIn link |
| Summary | Two or three lines: your role, years of experience, and your strongest skills |
| Experience | Newest first. Company, title, dates, then bullet points that start with an action and end with a result |
| Education | Degree, school, year. Add the ECA result if you have one |
| Skills and licences | Tools, software and any professional registration |
Example bullet: “Reduced customer complaints by 30% in six months by redesigning the support process for a team of eight.” Use only numbers you can prove if asked.

Check your credentials
Many Express Entry applicants need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to show how a Nigerian degree compares with a Canadian one. Regulated jobs, such as nursing, medicine, engineering and the trades, also need approval from the provincial regulator before you can practise. Start this early because it can take months.
Get your language scores
A strong English test result, or French if you have it, raises your immigration score and helps with employers. Book an approved test such as IELTS General Training and retake it if needed.
Where to look for jobs
- The Government of Canada Job Bank
- Company career pages and LinkedIn
- Provincial job boards and industry associations
- Recruiters in your field
Many roles are filled through referrals, so connect with people in your field online, ask for short conversations, and follow up politely.
A 90-day search plan
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Book your language test and start credential checks. Rewrite your resume and LinkedIn |
| 4 to 8 | Apply to a few roles each week, tailoring each resume. Message people in your field |
| 9 to 12 | Practise interviews, follow up on applications and review which routes need an offer |
Sectors with demand
- Healthcare: nurses, care workers and allied health staff
- Technology: software, data and security roles
- Skilled trades: electricians, welders, plumbers and carpenters
Avoid job scams
Do not pay a fee for a job offer, and be wary of offers that arrive without an interview. Verify the company and the recruiter’s email domain before sending documents.
Common questions
Can I get a job offer from Nigeria?
Yes, but employers need to be able to hire you legally, usually through an LMIA or a permit that does not need one. Many will only interview candidates who already hold a status.

Does Canadian experience matter?
It helps both with employers and with Express Entry through the Canadian Experience Class. Volunteer or contract work counts only if it meets the programme’s rules.
Do I need to restart my profession?
For regulated professions you may need exams or supervised practice before you can use your title. For other jobs, employers judge your skills and results.
